What’s on the island?

HELSINKI’S MOST EPIC VIEW

High up on the rocks, sheltered by coastal pines, the view opens out onto Helsinki’s archipelago. On a sunny day the water twinkles in between lush green islands as far as the eye can see.

AWARD WINNING NATURE TRAIL

If you’re in Helsinki, there’s no need to travel out of town to experience Finland’s breathtaking natural escapes. From only 30 minutes by public transport from Helsinki’s City Centre, the island paradise that is Vartiosaari is the setting for an award-winning 2.5km nature trail that winds around the coast, through jungle-like woods, boreal forests and across high moss-covered rocks. Messages found along the trail awaken your imagination and the suggested tasks are designed to refresh your weary soul.  On leaving the mainland, you can feel that you’re being transported into another world. This happens either by hitching a ride on a rowing boat or by taking the ferry. After a day on the island, it’s only a short journey back into the city for dinner at one of Helsinki’s many eateries.

ANIMALS!

There is a resident goat on the island, who can be found hanging out at Talli, just past the allotment gardens as you head North. Let him teach you a thing or two about chillaxing. The island is also home to a handful of friendly sheep in the summertime, much less noisy than petrol-guzzling lawn mowers. Island wildlife includes hares, rodents of different shapes and sizes, squirrels, raccoon dogs, bats (Vartiosaari is one of the most important bat habitats in Helsinki) and plenty of birds. Not to mention all the insects and butterflies. A moose visits the island from time to time, swimming the short distance across from the mainland at Ramsinniemi and there’s even been evidence of a lynx travelling through!

HELSINKI’S SMALLEST CAFE IN THE PRETTIEST SPOT

Come and have coffee and cinnamon buns by the jetty, served out of the cutest little yellow cabin you’ve ever seen. Swing on our hammocks, perch on the rocks and let your eyes rest on the horizon. Imagine you’re somewhere really exotic. You don’t need to imagine, you’re already there!
